When you face the unexplained—when grief, fear, or spiritual darkness confronts you—faith in Jesus is your anchor. This is a true story of my encounter with a demon-possessed woman and how Jesus set her free.

From Theory to Reality: Experiencing Urban Folklore
I’ve never considered myself overly religious or superstitious, but I believe the spiritual realm is real. Theologically, I accepted the possibility of demonic possession—spirits inhabiting a person’s body—but back then, stories about possession were seen more as mental health issues than spiritual matters. That changed when I personally encountered something I could not explain.
The Call for Help
Over two decades ago, while serving as an intern with the Cathedral of Praise youth group, a late-night phone call would change my perspective on faith forever. A man on the other end of the line was frantic—his sister, he said, was “demon-possessed.” A fellow youth leader and I finished our report, then went to the family’s home.
A Chilling Encounter
When we arrived, the woman sat bound to a circa 1970s wooden chair, eyes empty and distant. The scene resembled something from a gabi ng lagim episode. The family asked if she could be untied, but before we could respond, her eyes rolled back, and in a deep masculine voice, she spat and growled, “Stay away!”
My first instinct was to flee, but the youth leader with me, though shaken, believed I could handle it. So I prayed silently “LORD, I’m all they have right now, HELP”!.
The Struggle for Release
Moments later, the woman lost consciousness and then begged to be freed. When we disagreed, she suddenly roared and broke one arm of the sturdy wooden chair where her hand was tied. Chaos erupted.
“These miraculous signs will accompany those who believe: They will cast out demons in My name…” —
Mark 16:17, NLT
So we spoke the name of Jesus and commanded the spirit to leave. The entity reasoned that she had “invited” it, but we continued lifting the name of Jesus—praying and worshipping in tongues. The woman shrieked, convulsed, and finally collapsed into silence.
Jesus Sets Free the Demon Possessed
When she regained consciousness, her eyes were soft again. She wept and pleaded for help. I told her that deliverance comes only through Jesus Christ and urged her to pray the salvation prayer. As she tried to repeat after me, her voice tightened—there is an invisible hand that’s strangling her. We saw red marks forming around her neck.
With great effort, she finally managed to say His name—“Jesus”—before fainting once more.
“If you declare with your mouth, ‘Jesus is Lord,’ and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, you will be saved.” —
Romans 10:9, ESV
When she awoke again, the room overflowed with peace and joy.
The Law of Unintended Consequence
Afterwards, the family shared that she had built a small shrine for her late husband, talking to his photo daily and offering food—begging for his spirit to always accompany her. Little did she know the unintended consequence of this act.
Having just studied angels and demons in my theology class back then, I recognized this as the work of familiar spirits—entities that mimic the dead to deceive the grieving. They exploit emotional pain to gain influence over a person’s life.
Reflections: Faith and Reason Can Coexist
That night taught me two truths: the reality of demon possession and the authority of Jesus Christ.
We attract the presence of spirit beings with our behavior. I share this not to frighten but to remind us that the unseen world exists alongside the seen—and both affect our well-being.
Faith and reason can coexist. Believing in Christ does not mean rejecting science—it means embracing the fullness of reality, both physical and spiritual.
If you’re struggling with grief, fear, or guilt—know that Jesus is greater than any darkness. He loves you and wants to bring you freedom.
