Why I’m into social entrepreneurship? Because “I’m in the business of building people”.
Social Entrepreneurship
Yes-yes, I am not a big player and I do not fit into the usual social entrepreneur stereotype who manages an enterprise that employs or directly benefits the marginalised or the poor. My biz is into learning events organising, corporate training and consulting BUT our advocacies seek to influence change in the mindset of people that impacts their behaviour, online or offline, and affects their ability to create wealth and contribute to a humane society.
Social Business
Read: 11 Steps to Social Business
There are two schools of thought for social business. The 1st is a social enterprise, operated for profit but objectives are similar to that of a non-government organisation or foundation. The objective of the enterprise is to address social needs and improve quality of life. i.e. provide livelihood that’ll lead to poverty reduction. According to Yunus Social Business site
A SB (social business) is a non-dividend company created to solve a social problem. Like an NGO, it has a social mission, but like a business, it generates its own revenues to cover its costs.
The 2nd framework is similar to what IBM is promoting, and that is the use of technology in general and social web in particular, to connect, engage and collaborate with clients, consumers, suppliers, employees and other stakeholders. One of the benefits for this is to generate market analytics that will serve as basis to enhance business operations.
The Hybrid Me
As a person engaged in social business, my biz DNA is the fusion of old school values and information technology, And our philosophy is to add value whenever we have the opportunity to engage people in whatever intervention.
