A pattern is a powerful force that shapes the lives of people who are exposed to it, consciously and unconsciously.
We’ve all set personal and professional goals for ourselves. And we’ve designed plans and strategies to help us get there. And we put these plans and strategies into action by by creating and maintaining a standard day, week, month, and year.
For example, saving money. If we decide in advance how much we’ll save, we can also estimate our income. Stick to the pattern faithfully and we’ll reach our goals.
People also live their lives as a result of the pattern they saw.
- Young men learned how to be men by observing his father’s patterns. In the absence of a father figure, young men will emulate male relatives, social media, and society in general.
- Likewise, young women learn how to be a wife and mother from the pattern set by their mothers; similarly, in the absence of mothers, social media, female relatives, and society in general will provide an alternative pattern.
Employees, too, learn their skills by following the pattern set by the company.
- Leadership skills are learned by following the patterns established by their leaders.
- Organization culture dictates employee behavior.
- Direct reports follow emulate the behavior of their managers.
- Teachers learn to teach by following the patterns set by their mentors.
Brands are also known by the patterns to create the standard. For instance, Starbucks maintains the same standards of coffee and store ambiance across the globe.
Because patterns have a hidden but strong influence, if we are an influencer, we should be mindful of what example we set for those who look-up to us.
Do not conform any longer to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. — (Apostle) Paul (Romans 12:2a NIV)

I think leadership traits come from within and not necessarily from the past leaders. You may pick some isolated habits from your predecessors but, your life long experiences fashion the way you lead your people.
I dont even know the last time I actually sat down and laid out clear goals. I am usually better at just doing things when I think about them vs goals but when I have had them I have always been able to complete them. Great post.
